NCHD to Host Free Breast Cancer Awareness Lunch & Learn and Health Fair

In recognition of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the North Central Health District will host a luncheon on October 25 from Noon to 2:00 p.m. at the Macon-Bibb County Health Department Assembly Room located at 171 Emery Highway in Macon.

This free lunch will address the importance of breast cancer prevention through regular breast exams and mammograms.  Attendees will also learn about Georgia's Breast & Cervical Cancer Program, which offers the following services:

  • Breast cancer screenings and follow-ups at no or low cost to uninsured and low-income women 40 to 64 years old and women 35 to 39 with symptoms of breast cancer
  • Cervical cancer screenings and follow-ups at no or low costs to unisured and low income women 18 to 64 years old
  • Full coverage Medicaid for eligible women under 65 who have breast or cervical cancer and need treatment

The theme for this year's luncheon is "Unmasking Breast Cancer:  Get Your Pink On!"  In addition to wearing pink, women are also invited to wear a mask.  Tickets for the event are free, but must be reserved in advance.  For tickets, please call (478) 751-6243.  Only one ticket is allowed per caller.

All women over 40 years old should have mammograms every year.  This year, over 1,000 women in Georgia will die of breast cancer and approximately 6,000 wil be diagnosed with the disease.  A disproportionate number of deaths are among uninsured, minority women who have low incomes.  Routine screening can prevent approximately 20 to 25 percent of deaths from breast cancer among women over 40 years old.

Sponsors of the Breast Cancer Awareness Lunch & Learn include:  North Central Health District, Macon-Bibb County Health Department, American Cancer Society, PeachState Health Plan, Community Health Works and Dr. John C. Hawkins.  Call (478) 751-6243 to get your FREE ticket for the luncheon.
