Fight Like A Girl Lunch & Learn

In recognition of National Breast Cancer Prevention and Awareness Day, a lunch & learn called “Fight Like a Girl” will be held at the Macon-Bibb County Health Department on October 21 from Noon to 2:00 p.m. Tickets are free, but you must call to request a ticket before the luncheon on Friday. A limited number of tickets are available so anyone interested is encouraged to call today!

The goal of Breast Cancer Prevention and Awareness Day is to encourage women to make appointments for mammograms, and to learn more about the process of establishing and maintaining an effective breast health routine.

In addition to learning the basics on breast cancer detection and prevention, the Breast and Cervical Cancer Program (commonly known as BreasTEST & MORE and Women’s Health Medicaid) will give a presentation on the services available to women in the Central Georgia area.

This program provides the following services:

  • Breast cancer screenings and follow-ups at no or low cost to uninsured and low-income women 40 to 64 years old and women 35 to 39 with symptoms of breast cancer
  • Cervical cancer screenings and follow-ups at no or low costs to uninsured and low income women 18 to 64 years old
  • Full coverage Medicaid for eligible women under 65 who have breast or cervical cancer and need treatment All women over 40 years old should have mammograms every year.

This year, around 1,100 women in Georgia will die of breast cancer and another 5,600 will be diagnosed with the disease. A disproportionate number of deaths are among uninsured, minority women who have low incomes. Routine screening can prevent approximately 20 to 25% of deaths from breast cancer among women over 40 years old.

Sponsors of the Fight Like a Girl Lunch & Learn include: North Central Health District, American Cancer Society, Macy’s Department Store, and the Macon-Bibb County Health Department. Call (478) 751-6243 to get FREE tickets for the luncheon. Only 100 tickets will be given out on a first come, first serve basis; so call today to reserve your seat!
